The story behind Sageleaf

An open project
for a circular world.

Sageleaf is an open-source platform built by people who care about the environment — starting with a simple question: how do you actually recycle this specific product? We're building the database that answers it.

Why we built Sageleaf

Recycling has a clarity problem. Most people want to do the right thing — but the rules differ by product, by material, by location. A plastic bottle and a plastic bag are not the same. A lithium battery requires specialist handling. A working laptop has more value donated than shredded.

We started Sageleaf to fix that. A single open database of product-specific recycling guidelines — scan an item and get clear, actionable instructions for your area. No guessing. No greenwashing.

Sageleaf is open source by design. The data belongs to the community. The code belongs to the community. We're building public infrastructure for a more sustainable world, one product at a time.

This is just the beginning. The database is growing, the mobile app is launching, and we're looking for contributors, collaborators, and curious minds to help shape what comes next.

Our principles

These are the values that guide every decision we make at Sageleaf.

Circular by design

Everything we build is rooted in circular economy principles — reduce, reuse, recycle. Waste is a design flaw.

Open & transparent

The database is open. The code is open. Our decisions are made in the open. No hidden algorithms, no dark patterns.

Community first

Sageleaf exists because of contributors. Every entry added, every bug fixed, every guide written makes the platform better for everyone.

No lock-in, ever

Your data is yours. Export it, fork it, build on it. We're building public infrastructure, not a walled garden.
